#440 – Upon waking
Okay, Violet Eyed Man, firstly has violet eyes. Last chapter, when Hope asked which colour eyes he preferred the answer was Violet. Which is Significant. Possibly.
Also, this page suggests that Fang cares for the man... are they (dare I suggest) related?
Also, it looks like he was going to cut his wrist rather than stab himself- which is what I thought at first. Fang actually looks hurt by the fact that Zedwig was going to inflict pain upon himself. His concern can't be too sincere, though, b/c if it was, why in the world would he have used all of Zedwig's magic until this happened... again. Hmm...
Ok, Iove this page!!! So many things to look at... I'll shut up now.
Oo! Oo! One last thing! I see that the chirurgeon has his hair cut like Fang's...
He won't take the medicine because he feels he deserves to be in pain for what he's done?
I don't think I've heard the title "chirurgeon" before. What exactly kind of doctor is that?
Hmm... I bet the reason he's "used up" the healers is because the internal... rotting... caused by using destructive magic takes up so much energy to mend, that it kills the healer. (Death by magic-drain-- how ghastly.) Either that, or causes them to permanently lose their power. Please, Colby, tell me if I'm right! ^_^
A "chirurgeon" is an archaic form of "surgeon".
English origin: 1250–1300; from Latin: "chīrūr(gus)" Greek: "cheirourgós" meaning hand-worker, surgeon
I should know. ....Ahem (not that I was the child or anything).
Can't wait till next update!
(BTW, first comment on the site...love the comic.)
Yay go annoying fans! ^o^
Qualifying magic in the Lint-verse has as much to do with what is created as what the intent is. A person can't just create a fireball and then do whatever they want with it with no consequences. Elemental magic is neutral and is sort of like an ingredient in a recipe; it can be used defensively, constructively, or destructively, but where the use of magic gets qualified is through what the wizard intends to do with it. The presiding force from which magic is drawn in the world is a creative force, and so anytime a wizard imposes his will on magic to make it destroy or become destructive, the initial (unseen) decision is a violent act against creation.
In Zedwig's case, he is an especially talented wizard with an especially high talent in elemental manipulation, so fireballs and lightning are his most effective weapons. The process of where he draws the magic from and the difference in how he manipulates that force to make it destructive is described in exhaustive detail in my book (I might finish it if I ever get over my writer's block), but suffice it to say in the world of Lint, every action has consequences, and nobody gets away with creating huge forces of destruction without paying for it in the backlash.
Destructive magic is a nasty, nasty business, and this is not Dungeons and Dragons.
Excuse me for asking such questions, but I am trying to be a good Lint-ologist and learn all I possibly can about the world, characters, ect. Magic is one of the major defining factors in fantasy worlds.
So thank you for the excellent explanation ^_^
That last panel in particular makes me swoon, but I swear, your art has gotten even better lately.
Zedwig: ... a knife.
Fang: What were you doing with it?
Zedwig: ... holding it.
Fang: For what purpose?
Zewig: ... the purpose of a knife.
Suffice to say, though that would be amusing, I doubt that's how this highly-anticipated conversation is going to go, haha. I just found Zedwig's few and choice words amusing. (and yet depressing, poor fellow)
I also think it's rather telling that Fang says "He won't take it", instead of "I will MAKE him take it" or something along those lines. He seems to like getting his way, and the fact that he won't be shoving that medicine carelessly down Zedwig's throat is significant. *nods sagely* Oh, what an odd, twisted relationship those two seem to have. Zedwig obviously doesn't enjoy it. o_O
P.S. I love Zedwig's expression when his knife is taken away: (^(=_=))
This is one of the best webcomics ever.
*fangirls Zedwig* Oh, poor Zedwig!!!!! I hope he lives!! Just don't kill Bactine so he will :(
Heheh I know: bactine has a lot of power and can heal Zedwig without dying!!! YESSS!!!!
Help!
It's called the "Desert of SHERDS", Luprand. Sheesh. I called it "sherds" because when I took archaeology in college they made me wash pot "sherds" (because "sherds" is the correct archaeological term) for hours and I hated it. Thus ... well, that isn't a good reason, but that's where "sherds" came from.
If you're still reading this drivel, the soothsayer is in chapter five.
Thank you!
Also, for some reason that knife looks extremely sharp, I mean, I have seen painted knives but this one actually looked dangerously sharp. Nice job.
Lastly, the look on Fang's face is great in the last panal. He is awesome all the way through but the hurt-but-angry expression shows perfectly in the last panal.
