#440 – Upon waking
He does love Sangwine, though, in a familial way.
Fairies, being immortals, have the ability to perceive things others can't. She just plays it dumb most of the time, because wise people tend to realize being underestimated is the best policy.
Hope hasn't done anything that Xylic sees as making her worthy to be in his "clique". Also, the fact that he thinks she's after him makes him put up all kinds of spiky shields when he's around her, as he's always done in the past. He hates female attention, yet longs for it, and those two aspects of his personality can't seem to reconcile themselves. The fact that Bactine has always been extremely ignorant of Xylic's attractiveness had a large part to play in why they are so close, because he has never felt his seclusion to be threatened by her.
PLUS, as was explained by Hope some time ago, she is immortal and just plain doesn't have romanticism in her, along with a vast plethora of other mortal feelings and trappings, which is part of the reason why she's harder to identify with than most of the characters. So the kissing is moot. Too bad Xylic doesn't know that; he might like her more.
I love Hope's expression (mainly the eyes) in the middle-bottom panel, and the curve of her back in the rightmost center row panel. Her motions throughout the last two rows + the changing "camera" angle really capture how she is sashaying around Xylic!
Of COURSE you love Hope :)
ps. i LOVE the pictures, colby!
